2008 Family Portraits

We had our family photos done last week and for the first time went to an actual photographer instead of someone in the mall. April McClintock in Watertown, NY. She did an AMAZING job. And I highly recommend her if you are in the area. Her website is aprilmacphoto.com . We were scheduled for a 3 hour shoot but Bekah only made it through 2 hours and was melting down during that time. (Even though we strategically planned it for after nap time; that day neither girl took a nap!) But despite a grouchy toddler she was still able to get some good shots. Here are a few proofs (from over 40-50 to choose from) that I wanted to share.

Sesame Street Live and First Snow Fall!

Last night the USO brought Sesame Street Live to Fort Drum.  The girls and I were able to go (for free) to see all their favorites; Zoe, Rosita, Cookie Monster, Grover, and most of all ELMO!!  It started snowing really hard right before we left and by the time we got there, there was already over an inch on the ground.  Here are some pictures from the night.

I was surprised how hard it actually did snow last night. When we woke up there was about 6-8 inches on the ground, and its still coming down strong!! Good news is that its supposed to stop for Halloween, but I think I need to figure out how to winterize the girls costumes without just sticking a big jacket over them.

Creepy Halloween Pictures

I went on a walk along the Black River a few weeks ago.  It runs right by our house and is so relaxing to see, especially with the foliage and the geese flying overhead.  I probably walked about 3 miles when I came upon this really old cemetery.  I really am not "into" cemeteries but this one was really beautiful.  The tombstones were really old and some were moss covered.  And then there was a huge cross in the middle, that was actually really comforting and powerful to see.  I took some pics to turn into a Halloween collage - well probably not the cross pic, but the rest of them.  So a little weird I know, but I am experimenting with Halloween decor.  So...enjoy!

Just Got Back From the Castle and Feeling Like a Princess!

We went to Boldt castle today.  It is on a island in the 1000 island region of New York.  (Yes there are literally 1000 islands in this little region on the the St Lawrence river between the US and Canada)  It was beautiful!! And the history of it was such a sweet love story.  So rather than retell it badly, here it is from their website:

At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size Rhineland Castle in Alexandria Bay, on Picturesque Heart Island.  The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise.

Beginning in 1900, Boldt's family shared four glorious summers on the island in the Alster Tower while 300 workers, stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned the six story, 120 room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a draw bridge, and a dove cote. Not a single detail or expense was spared.

In 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegrammed the island and commanded the workers to immediately "stop all construction." Louise had died suddenly. A broken hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Boldt never returned to the island, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his love.

For 73 years, the castle and various stone structures were left to the mercy of the wind, rain, ice, snow and vandals. When the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977, it was decided that through the use of all net revenues from the Castle operation it would be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.

Since 1977, several million dollars have been applied to rehabilitating, restoring and improving the Heart Island structures.

OK, me again.  What this doesn't tell you is that the island was originally called Hart Island and he had it reconstructed into the shape of a heart and renamed "Heart" Island.  Talk about a romantic!!  There are hearts everywhere in the architecture and in the gardens.

It was really warm today, so it was gorgeous walking around enjoying the flowers, the lily pond, and the girls had so much fun playing in the leaves.  We had such a fun day and really felt like princesses, well, except Rolland.

After ice cream and a relaxing boat ride home, the girls passed out on the way home.  Royalty is tiring I guess!   Enjoy the rest of the pictures!!

Fall Fun!!

We have been having so much fun and making some really great family memories. Awhile ago we took the girls bowling using the ramps and the bumpers. Rolland and I weren't even letting the girls win and Bekah still beat us!!

We also took the girls to Old McDonald's Farm to look at animals and take a hayride. There was a Wizard of Oz themed corn maze the girls loved, especially the "Spooky - Spooky" witch!!

Fall here is beautiful and we were blessed to have been able to move here during such a great season. Rolland was able to take leave before he had to sign into his new unit and we have been able to do some amazing trips. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to create some family memories before he deploys!
